High Hardness Nickel - Carbon Nanotubes Composite Electroplating

In this paper we present some results on making Ni/CNTs composite by electroplating technique. The work aims to create an advanced nano-composite coating surfaces by taking superior mechanical properties of the CNTs. The Watts solution was used for nickel plating experiments. We utilized two different methods to disperse CNTs in the Watts solution. In the first method, CNTs were mixed in the Watts solution by ultrasonication. In the second one, the CNTs were chemically functionalized by using diazo coupling reaction in sulfanilic acid (NH2C6H4SO3H) and nitrous acid (HNO2) before mixing in the Watts solution. In order to investigate the role of CNTs additives in coating, nickel was plated onto copper substrates with and without CNTs additives. The Vickers hardness of coatings was measured by Shimadzu Micro Hardness Tester.

Estimation of Heterosis for Yield Attributing Traits and Fruit Borer Incidence in Round Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.)

Heterosis is widely utilized for the selection of superior cross combinations. Since the heterosis has become commercially feasible in developing hybrid brinjal. In the present investigation, six parents were selected on the basis of divergence and crossed in diallele design. The manifestations of hybrid vigour in thirty hybrids were studied. Significant heterosis over better parents and standard check was observed for yield attributes and Fruit borer incidence. The hybrid KS-224 × Swarna Mani and SBRB-6/12 × SBRB-3/12 expressed significant and desirable heterobeltiosis and standard heterosis for yield and fruit borer incidence. Heterosis for fruit yield per plant ranged from -31.78% (SBRB-2/12 × KS224) to 60.40 percent (KS224 × Swarna Mani) over better parent and -5.01% (SBRB-2/12 × KS224) to 88.79% (SBRB-3/12 × SBRB-2/12) over standard parent.

Prevalence and Associated Factors of Functional Disability in Activities of Daily Living and Instrumental Activities among Institutionalized Tunisian Elderly

Aim: We conducted this study to assess the functional disability of institutionalized elders and to identify its associated factors.

Place and Duration of the Study: This study was conducted during a period of 3 months from the first January to 31 March 2015 in the long-stay institutions of older persons in the region of the Tunisian Center.

Type of the Study: It is a cross sectional study.

Methodology: This study conducted among 110 Tunisian insutionalized elderly to assess the functional disability using the Katz Index of disability in Activities of Daily Living and the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale.

Results: Among the institutionalized elderly, 57.3% were ADL dependent and 85.4% were IADL dependent. In the multivariate analysis, female gender, age, self-perceived health status, motor disability and cognitive deficit were independent factors associated with ADL disability among institutionalized elderly. Independent factors associated with IADL disability were female gender, age, having friends outside the institution, having visits and receiving a family financial support.

Conclusion: Disability is affected by a number of non-modifiable and modifiable predisposing factors which should be the most targets of preventive interventions.

Computational Method for the Simulation of Duffing Oscillators

A one-step computational method is proposed for the simulation of Duffing oscillators in this research. In achieving this, power series was adopted as a basis function in the derivation of the method. The integration was carried out within a one-step interval, where the interval was partitioned at four different points. The computational method developed was applied on some Duffing equations and from the results obtained; it was evident that the method developed is computationally reliable.

Cordyceps the Fungal Gold - A Review

Cordyceps is an entomophagous medicinal mushroom that commands a price close to that of Gold or even more, it is believed that the price of this fungus reached USD $20,000 to 40,000 per kg in the international market. Cordyceps spp  is mainly endemic to the Tibetian plateau including the adjoining high altitude areas of the central and East Himalayas that includes Nepal, Bhutan and India’s Uttaranchal, Sikkim, Himachal and Arunachal Pradesh. However certain species like Cordyceps militaris is said to be distributed worldwide from 0 to >2000 m a.s.l. The fungus attacks many lepidopteran larvae especially Thitarodes caterpillars and mummifies it. The larvae along with the mummified insect is highly valued for its medicinal property. The fungus initially navigates the weak body part of the larvae and then penetrates the insect integument which is composed of chitin or it may enter through the mouth region and then dispenses endotoxin to the larval blood, proliferates and finally mummifies the larvae and it’s stroma emerges through the larval head. Cordyceps sp is the world’s most efficient and expensive medicinal mushroom and considered as a traditional Chinese medicine having multiple medicinal and pharmacological properties and is used to treat respiratory and immune disorders, pulmonary diseases, renal, liver and cardiovascular diseases, hyposexuality and hyperlipidema etc. With regard to the various medicinal properties this review is limited to the facts which is substantiated with proofs only. This review further deals with the various methods of artificial production of the fungus.
